The Institute of Asian and African Studies founded in 1956 is the leading Russian Centre for Oriental Studies. It employs more than 250 members including 28 professors and 70 assistant professors. Many of them are well known as authors of fundamental studies, text-books and dictionaries for their translations of Japanese, Chinese, Sanskrit, Arabic, Hindi, Persian and other Oriental and African texts of fiction.
The staff of the Institute has worked out the syllabus and text books on History of Asian and African countries and on Oriental Literature as well as special books on languages, history, ethnology, geography and economics of the certain regions.
More than 40 oriental and West-European languages are being taught at the Institute.

 

STRUCTURE

The Institute comprises three sections: Philology, History and Socio-Economics, providing students with equal volume of knowledge of Oriental and West-European languages.
I. For those specializing in History the main courses are:
General History, History of Russia, History of Asian and African Countries, Archaeology, Ethnology and  a number of special disciplines.

II. Specialization in Philology is based on the departments of Arabic Philology, Iranian Philology, Turkish Philology, Indian Philology, Chinese Philology, African Studies and Philology of South-East Asia, Mongolia and Korea, Japanese Philology, West - European languages.

The courses in Linguists, Literature Studies, General Linguistics and History of Literature as well as special courses in Theoretical Phonetics, Grammar, Lexicology, Dialectology and History of a chosen oriental language and in literature, culture, geography and political system of the country or region being studied will be presented to you during the period of study.

III. During your studies at the Socio-Economic division you will take a number of general courses in Higher Mathematics, Economic Statistics, Financial and Credit systems, Economics and economic Geography of Asian and African Countries, Economics of Russia, International Economic Relations as well as special courses on Economics of regions and countries of your interest.

The Institute has more than 50 Agreements of cooperation and student exchange programs with the main Universities of Asia and Africa. Important part of the curriculum is a special training (up to 10 months) in the countries of the language being studied and the language classes guided by native language speakers.

INFORMATION OF STUDY PROGRAMMS FOR FOREIGNERS

Study programs:

1. BA (Bachelor of Arts in history, philology or economics).8 semesters -4 years (BA Honours Degree Diploma)
Entrance Requirements: 180000 Rub (~7000$) in a year (accommodation is not included).
2. MA (4 semesters) – 2 years, programs:
History of Asian and African Studies, Languages of Asian and African countries, Literature of Asian and African countries, Economy of Asian and African countries, Policy and International relations of Asian and African countries
You are welcome to deepen your knowledge in Philology, History, Economics of Asian and African countries at master studies of our Institute and receive MA Honours Degree Diploma.
Entrance Requirements: 180000 Rub (~7000$) in a year (accommodation is not included).
3. PhD (6 semesters)- 3 years, speciality:
World history, Literature of Asian and African countries, Languages of Asian and African countries, World economy, Policy and international relations of Asian and African countries. 180000Rub (~7000$)
5.  Post.doc. (regarding readiness of the scientific work) up to 3 years.
Speciality: the same as PhD 200000 Rub/ (~8000$)
You may choose the theme of your postgraduate and post.doc. projects among the great number of Institute staff research interests, i.e. History, Theory and Typology of Oriental and African languages, theory of Translation as well as Typology of oriental literatures regional interrelationship. The other line of current research work includes new conceptual approaches to oriental History periodization as well as Economical History, Historical Demography, Ethno genesis, Peculiarities of Local cultures and traditions, religion and Philosophical systems.
6. Probation period up to 10 months: individual plan.
In the Institute there is the probation program on Oriental, English and Russian languages and in the Departments of specialization: social-economical, historical and philological. The probation can be varied from 1 month to 10 months. Tuition fee – 350-550$ per month according to the complexity of study program.

Knowledge of Russian is obligatory for all the applicants. It can be achieved through different studies abroad or in Russia including preparatory courses at the Institute that take full academic year (from September till June). Tuition fee - 3500$ in a year.
The participants of the program regarding their results of the exams will get a state certificate of the I level knowledge of Russian language from the Ministry of High Education RF. This document guarantees them the possibility to be accepted at any Study Centre on the territory of Russian Federation. If any of the probators are going to enter Institute of Asian and African Studies from the second semester they will be taught by special program used at the Institute (they will be given specific lexicon, texts and etc.).In a year the participants will receive 720 hours (16-18 hours in a week) of Russian language.
Russian summer courses are also organized in IAAS – 3 weeks in July or August for groups (min 10 persons).Tuition fee – 350$. During the period of study professional lectures on Russian history, culture, policy and economy will be proposed as well as lessons of Russian language (18 hours a week).Our teachers perfectly know oriental and West-European languages. Besides that the students of our institute will accompany the participants in their cultural program, which can be organized beforehand.
Accommodation at Moscow State University Campus will be proposed for all the participants of study programmes (150$ in a month).All the participants have to have medical insurance with them or be ready to buy it at Moscow State University (min 180$ in a year).

DOCUMENTS FOR THE ENROLLMENT IN IAAS, MSU

  1. Pure scanned copy of the passport. The valid of it should be 3-4 years. The official invitation you will receive in 2 months.
  2. Original education documents: be ready to certify them at the Expert Center in the Ministry of High Education RF. (translation on Russian language assured by notary).
  3. Confirmation about knowing Russian language (I level). Excepting those who are going to enter preparatory courses at IAAS, MSU).
  4. a. Medical certificate of health condition;
    b. Results on AIDS, lungs’ examination;
  5. Be ready to buy medical insurance in MSU (150-200$ in a year according to the packet) or be insured by the system of international insurance in your own country.
  6. Photo (3x4) 6 pieces (black-white, mat).
